Transformation 2011 - Day 1

Throughout the month of December, and especially in the last two weeks, I’ve been “letting myself go.”  I haven’t exercised much at all, and I’ve been recklessly indulging in all of the treats of the holidays.  I’ve had lots of cookies, ice cream, french fries and alcohol, and have been eating processed food without remorse.
My idea was to let myself get a bit out of shape so that I could get back in shape starting in the new year. And I want to document my process here on my blog so you can follow along. The point is that if i can improve on this body by taking the steps I’m going to spell out over the next month.  And so can you, if you follow along.

This first video shows my body today. I’m using this as my guideline.  I’m not saying that I”m out of shape by typical standards, but I will say that I’m accustomed to being more toned and carrying a bit less fat than I am currently.  I also talk a little bit about my nutrition and I demonstrate a bit of movement that I recommend doing on the first day.  You’ll notice that it’s not strenuous at all, but it’s gentle and complete.  I’m gradually preparing my body for what will come in the next few days.  If I were to jump right into it, I might hurt myself or be really sore the next day; and that will stop my progress.
So watch the video and please feel free to leave comments at the bottom of this blog.
Today’s Food:
9:30am Breakfast:
Oatmeal made with a mixture of water and 1% milk
1/2 Tablespoon of spirula
1 Tablespoon of ground flax meal
1:30pm Lunch:
steamed assorted vegetables and
sliced top sirloin steak
on a bed of spinach
Tablespoon of tahini (ground sesame seeds)
and dash of balsamic vinegar
then...
handful of blueberries
handful of pecans
1/2 of yogurt

5:00pm Dinner:
one roasted sweet potato
one cucumber
a handful of almonds
sliced top sirloin steak

11:00pm Snack:
handful of pecans
frozen bananas
acai frozen smoothie
cinnamon
blueberries
yogurt
sprinkled with chai seeds

To give you an idea of portion sizes, I like to think in terms of handfuls because it seems to be helpful and relative to each person. For example, here is the portion of sweet potatoes and steak I served myself. (I ate all of the meat and about half of the sweet potato)

Comments

I'm curious to know when you go to bed. I was always told that late night eating was something only fatties and satanists do.
Christopher, I usually try to go to bed between 11 and 12 pm, but I've been keeping very late hours this week because of rehearsals. I'm not getting home until 11:30 and since I'm so active in rehearsal, I burn up my dinner and need more food when I get back. So then I eat, but I don't want to go to bed right away. I've been getting to bed between 1 and 2 these days.

While it is commonly believed that eating right before bedtime could easily lead to incomplete metabolism of the food, or a strange desire to draw pentagles and speak in tongues (or whatever satanists do), it really isn't the case. It is as individual as most things related to diet. I'm more concerned with not getting enough food and having my body catabolize my muscles, which will end up making me keep weight on or even gain more. I haven't really been all that diligent about eating enough during the day, which is why I'm hungry at night and why I must eat before bed.

Also, personally, I have a really hard time falling asleep when I'm hungry.
